I have always loved dogs. While my daughters were growing up, we had several dogs, but our last dog, Cash, was truly a savior for our family. We adopted Cash when he was two years old, and he lived with us until my oldest daughter went to college. Around that time, my marriage began to fall apart, which caused Cash a lot of anxiety. To help him cope with the upheaval at home, he went to college with my oldest daughter. When she graduated, he moved to Florida with her. Eventually, her job required her to be out of town more frequently, so he then moved in with my youngest daughter while she was in college. After she graduated, Cash relocated to Kansas with her. He has truly been on quite an adventure! He’s still thriving in Kansas with my youngest daughter and her fiancé, and he occasionally visits me in Minnesota. I love seeing him when I travel to Kansas. He will be turning 14 on November 14th, and all indications suggest that he is healthy and happy! He is genuinely the family dog.
When Cash left, I found it difficult to focus on myself, let alone take care of another dog, so I became “dogless.” Over time, I began to yearn for a dog. After being divorced for five years, becoming an empty nester, and feeling quite alone, I realized I needed a dog in my life for my own sanity and emotional well-being. That’s when Merri came along! I adopted Merri when she was just eight weeks old, and she is now one year old. She has become the joy of my life! Merri travels everywhere with me and accompanies me to nearly all of my outings. She makes friends with everyone she meets and loves both people and most other dogs, easily adapting to various situations. Plus, she doesn’t shed! I adopted Merri from Woodhaven Pups, a fantastic breeder who specializes in cavapoos and cockapoos. Merri is a cavapoo, and her personality is incredible—she is smart and knows all of her toys by name. I can ask her to fetch “Mr. Pumpkinhead,” and she brings him right back from her large collection of toys. Merri is a snuggler who adores belly rubs. She truly brings pure joy to my life!
I’ve tried numerous products for Merri, some good and some not so good, and I’d like to share the ones that have worked well. First, she absolutely hates dog beds. Despite trying many different kinds, she doesn’t like them and often tries to chew on them. She drags them all over the house, which is quite amusing to watch! Instead of wasting money on beds she dislikes, I decided to use faux sheepskin fur rugs and Merri loves them! I have placed them all over my house in the spots where she enjoys snuggling or taking naps. They are affordable, come in various colors (I have navy blue, white, brown and gold), and are easy to clean. I highly recommend them!
Another item I really love is the Tuff Pupper Anti-Pull Heavy Duty Dog Harness. This harness is fantastic! It fits well, and I feel secure knowing that she won’t get loose during walks or travel. The Joytale double-sided reflective dog leash pairs perfectly with this harness, giving me great control over her when we’re together, out and about.
The Apple AirTag is essential, in my opinion. It gives me peace of mind knowing that if she were to run away, I could always track her. Plus, you can get some really cool waterproof AirTag dog collar holders that come in a variety of colors.
Merri loves her “fluffies.” Cash was never a toy lover kind of dog; he would rip the stuffing out of toys as soon as he got one and then completely ignore it. So, I didn’t even think to get toys for Merri when I first received her. Turns out, she loves toys! While she occasionally rips the stuffing out of a toy, she generally enjoys playing with and sleeping next to them. When she was a tiny puppy, I found these Legend Sally Dog Squeeky Toys on Amazon that I thought would be junk, but she loved them and still plays with one every now and then. These turned out to be a great purchase! Also, when she got a little older and it was too cold to go outside I found this amazing puzzle that she just loves. It keeps her busy and wears her out too. Give it a whirl with your precious pup!
Merri has been such a blessing to me! I hesitated for a long time before getting a dog again because I didn’t want anything to “tie me down” or put me in a position where I would have to find care for her. I did my research and found the perfect breed for me. I can’t say enough good things about the cavapoo breed; they are affectionate and utterly adorable!
